The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) begins operation as a colonial tax establishment and function as a sub-division of the Inland Revenue Department of Anglophone West Africa. The FIRS was established in 1943.
It was gotten from the erstwhile Inland Revenue Department. This body is in charge of the Anglophone West Africa which comprises of Nigeria, Gambia, Ghana and Sierra Leone in the colonial era.
In 1958, a Board was established for the Inland Revenue under the Income Tax Ordinance of 1958. Responsibility Of Federal Inland Revenue Service
According to the structure of Nigeria, the administration of tax is in multiple tires. We have the federal government level, the state government level and the local government level.
At the federal level, we have the Federal Inland Revenue Service which is responsible for the assessing, accounting and collection of tax and other revenues that belong to the Federal Government.
At the state level, this body is called the State Board of Internal Revenue. It is a subordinate of the FIRS just that it functions at the state tire to collect, account, and assess the tax and revenues that belong to the state and give account to the Federal tire of the body.
